How scientists in Austria are using quantum quirks to revolutionise thermodynamics.

Meet the team that's pioneered the Atomchip technology—a platform that is used to manipulate quantum fields in such a way that proffers new insights into information flows and entropy in ultra-cold environments. Jörg Schmiedmayer, Marcus Huber, and João Sabino are a cross-institute team working to uncover new insights using this versatile experimental platform.

This film by Toby Fitzpatrick is the second in a series of short documentaries by FQxI following physicists into their quantum laboratories.

Explore more:

  • In the first documentary in the series, "Information as Fuel," by Geoff Marsh, Oxford physicist Natalia Ares shows us how carbon nanotubes can test time's thermodynamic arrow.
  • The Austrian group describe their "Quantum Refrigerator" in reporter Nicola Jones' article.
  • Marcus Huber tells Toby about the "Thermodynamic Cost of Timekeeping," on the FQxI podcast.
