How Could Science be Different?

The modern world has been shaped by the progress of natural sciences and their interplay with mathematics. There have been at least three models of such development, and in all cases, magic and science were closely intertwined. Successive applications of the scientific method and the continuous mathematics-physics feedback loop that separated the two were possible only as a result of a number of coincidences in the natural world and human history. Objective physical reality may provide the Rosetta stone for finding a common language with hypothetical alien minds. However, we are now entering a new age of magic, where denying reality is becoming easier. It is uncertain whether we will reach the stars or be ruled by spell-casting priests.
