How Could Science be Different?

Collaboration is essential to science, yet collaboration across scientific communities is hindered by prejudice and miscommunication, which disproportionately affect scientists from disadvantaged and less-established communities. To illustrate these negative effects this essay will look at the informal peer review process, one of the first steps towards publishing a research article. Peer reviews are microcosms of scientific collaboration (and competition), and they are highly subject to miscommunication, bias, and prejudice. This essay recommends a novel solution to these problems using Artificial Intelligence (AI). Applied appropriately, several emerging AI capabilities have the potential to reduce prejudice and improve communication, making the peer review process more effective.
